05-19-08 - Recalling a road trip February 2008

The day before Flagstaff, I woke up in Albuquerque, NM.

That reminds me; When Mimi and I went to the Grand Canyon, we stopped at Flagstaff for the night and hung out with Katie and her friends. She took us to a freak show. It was pretty cool. They had a women they called "tripod" with only one leg, "lopster girl" (messed up fingers) ; "elephant man" (warts all over the body); a midget, guy with short arms; etc...

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the day I drove into Vegas, I passed over the Hoover Dam for the first time in my life. I actually think this was the coolest thing I saw for the entire road trip. They are building a new bridge that will pass over top of the hoover dam, 900 feet above the colorado river. Right now they just have a bit of it built on either side.

Anyway, Albuquerque seemed like a good place to rest. I didn't do much there; just stayed at a campground. But I can't wait to go back. It seemed like an amazing city when I drove in at night. The drive Albuquerque to Flagstaff was probably the most amazing part of the whole cross-country trip. The whole southwest area of the country has got to be the most scenic.

The day before, I woke up in Stillwater, OK; home of Oklahoma State University. Funny story... two days before, in southern Virginia, while I was eating diner, I looked up on the internet all of the Phi Tau houses I would pass along the way. Well, I wasn't exactly passing Stillwater, but it was close enough to my route to warrant a trip to OSU! So I called the chapter house and asked for the "Social Chair". I explained my situation - travelling the country, alumni of another chapter house, looking for some cool guys to hang out with. I offered to fund some partying. They abliged, and offered a place to stay. So I took them up on the offer. I parked my 5th wheel at the local Walmart, and called up my new buddy who came and picked me up. He took me back to the chapter house, which was very much like my own, and introduced me to the brotherhood. I shook lots of hands, but most importantly, actually was challenged for the Phi Tau password and handshake! Once I sucessfully passed the test, they took me out to the local bar, which was not impressive on a Tuesday night, but overall it was fun, and I made some new friends that I'll probably never see again.

From Stillwater to Albuquerque was the most desolate area I've ever seen. Nothing but flat brushland around western oklahoma / Amarillo, TX area. At times I was worried that my tank would run out before I got to the next deisel gas station.

The day before OSU, I drove 900 miles from some campground just over the eastern border of TN. I was in a rush to get to OSU and spend a night there with enough time to make it to Flagstaff on Thursday night.

To Be Continued - I finally have AC!!
